     John and I are excited to report that today's College Hill
neighborhood recycling drive brought in an amazing $237.00!

     Here are the amounts we collected and were paid:
              Aluminum cans--491 lbs. @ 45 cents/lb.
                                               $220.95
              Misc. metals ("Shred #3 Loose Metal")--300 lbs. @  5.5
cents/lb.                                    16.50
              ATM rounding
                                                                    --.45

 $237.00 !!!*
      This recycling drive was the second most lucrative one of any that
College Hill has ever had!   (The biggest drive was just this past March,
when we brought in $292.00!)  We brought in about 100 pounds more of
aluminum this time than in March, but the price we were paid for both
aluminum and miscellaneous metals had dropped.  Had we been paid today 55
cents/pound for aluminum and 10.25 cents/pound for miscellaneous metals, as
we were paid in March, we would have surpassed the March proceeds.  But
there's no predicting the prices we'll get when we schedule a recycling
drive months in advance.  We are very happy with the participation and
results with this drive.
      There are several likely reasons for the great results again.  People
were excited to get together for the first time in two years to celebrate
Independence Day and probably drank a lot of canned beverages.  Publicity
for the drive was very good.  (Erin Snethen included the dates of the
year's recycling drives in earlier newsletters and included information
about the drive on the Independence Day flier that was delivered to
neighbors.  Kat Shaw sent out a couple of email reminders about the drive
to neighbors.  There was a recycling float in the 4th of July parade.)  We
had great participation from many of our recycling "regulars," as well as
from some neighbors who hadn't recycled with us very much or at all before.

       Since the neighborhood recycling drives began in September 1990, our
College Hill Association has received *$15,020.08* from recycling!  At the
beginning of the year, I had hoped that we'd reach $15,000 in recycling
income by the end of 2022.  We reached that goal with only two recycling
drives and still have two others planned for 2022!
      We thank and appreciate VERY MUCH all the people who contributed
their recyclables.  We were also pleased that most neighborhood recyclers
are sorting their materials the way we've been asked to do.  Many thanks
also to Erin and Kat for their vital help in publicizing the drive.
      A huge shout-out also to the dear neighbor friends who helped to pick
up and deliver recyclables:  Susan Duffy; Frank and Sarah Meadows; Cynthia
Neufeld-Smith; Ardith and Greg Woertz; and John and Carol Christensen.   We
also thank Elizabeth Herbert, a former College Hill neighbor, who lent us
a truck and donated recyclables to the cause.
     Our next recycling drive will be *Saturday, September 17.*
     We ask again that a communication to the neighbors go out soon to
share the results of the drive, thank them for their participation, and
encourage them to start saving and pre-sorting for the next
drive--September 17 (with a reminder that cat food and tuna cans, aluminum
pie plates, and aluminum foil be bagged with steel cans--not with aluminum
beverage cans).  Also, since aluminum beverage cans bring in the greatest
amount of money from these drives, we ask that neighbors be especially
encouraged to save them for College Hill.  We can also collect
miscellaneous metals, such as copper and bronze, metal piping, and
wiring.  Please
also let neighbors who want to get rid of their aluminum cans or other
recyclables before our next drive know that they can contact us
(785-554-8068) so we can store those items until then.  (As much as
possible, we want to encourage neighbors to recycle with our
neighborhood!)  Thank you!
