Both Programs lead into high-demand positions that pay a living wage. *Industrial Production Technology**(only available in the morning)* *Average wage: $19.46 per Hour* *Cost: (Thanks to scholarships from MARS and the Kansas Promise Scholarship) less than $400 for high school and around $700 for adults.* Prepare for a job on the manufacturing floor that is in high-demand and offers a great starting wage! Industrial production technicians train to become an important part of the highly innovative manufacturing field. This program also provides a strong foundation for students wanting to pursue a career in other fields such as engineering. At Washburn Tech, you will get an introduction to reading measurements, troubleshooting, working with PLCs and logistics. *Plumbing Technology **(Available both morning and afternoon)* *Average Salary: $51,070 per year* *Cost: $1,347 for High School (Other scholarships available to help offset cost) and potentially Free for adults (through the Kansas Promise Scholarship)* Washburn Tech?s Plumbing Technology program introduces students to the knowledge and skills required for entry into the residential plumbing industry. You will learn how to read site plans and install various pipes, pipe-fittings, fixtures and valves. Instruction also covers water distribution systems and key aspects of waste removal systems. Codes and regulations pertaining to the plumbing industry are key topics, as well. The program concludes with an internship, providing each student with hands on experience under the guidance of professionals in the field. Attending half-day, you can complete this 30-credit hour program in two semesters. *Both of these programs would be great for individuals looking to increase their employability and wages. * *Please let me know if you have any questions or want a tour of the programs!!!* [image: signature_3852212284] [image: /Users/havensch/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Outlook/Data/Library/Caches/Signatures/signature_2095165281] Charles "Chaz" Havens, Ed.D. We made $237 yesterday! ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Carol Christensen Date: Sat, Jul 9, 2022 at 6:22 PM Subject: College Hill recycling results for 9 July 2022 drive Hello! John and I are excited to report that today's College Hill neighborhood recycling drive brought in an amazing $237.00! Here are the amounts we collected and were paid: Aluminum cans--491 lbs. @ 45 cents/lb. $220.95 Misc. metals ("Shred #3 Loose Metal")--300 lbs. @ 5.5 cents/lb. 16.50 ATM rounding --.45 *TOTAL $237.00 !!!* This recycling drive was the second most lucrative one of any that College Hill has ever had! (The biggest drive was just this past March, when we brought in $292.00!) We brought in about 100 pounds more of aluminum this time than in March, but the price we were paid for both aluminum and miscellaneous metals had dropped. Had we been paid today 55 cents/pound for aluminum and 10.25 cents/pound for miscellaneous metals, as we were paid in March, we would have surpassed the March proceeds. But there's no predicting the prices we'll get when we schedule a recycling drive months in advance. We are very happy with the participation and results with this drive. There are several likely reasons for the great results again. People were excited to get together for the first time in two years to celebrate Independence Day and probably drank a lot of canned beverages. Publicity for the drive was very good. (Erin Snethen included the dates of the year's recycling drives in earlier newsletters and included information about the drive on the Independence Day flier that was delivered to neighbors. Kat Shaw sent out a couple of email reminders about the drive to neighbors. There was a recycling float in the 4th of July parade.) We had great participation from many of our recycling "regulars," as well as from some neighbors who hadn't recycled with us very much or at all before. Since the neighborhood recycling drives began in September 1990, our College Hill Association has received *$15,020.08* from recycling! At the beginning of the year, I had hoped that we'd reach $15,000 in recycling income by the end of 2022. We reached that goal with only two recycling drives and still have two others planned for 2022! We thank and appreciate VERY MUCH all the people who contributed their recyclables. We were also pleased that most neighborhood recyclers are sorting their materials the way we've been asked to do. Many thanks also to Erin and Kat for their vital help in publicizing the drive. A huge shout-out also to the dear neighbor friends who helped to pick up and deliver recyclables: Susan Duffy; Frank and Sarah Meadows; Cynthia Neufeld-Smith; Ardith and Greg Woertz; and John and Carol Christensen. We also thank Elizabeth Herbert, a former College Hill neighbor, who lent us a truck and donated recyclables to the cause. Our next recycling drive will be *Saturday, September 17.* We ask again that a communication to the neighbors go out soon to share the results of the drive, thank them for their participation, and encourage them to start saving and pre-sorting for the next drive--September 17 (with a reminder that cat food and tuna cans, aluminum pie plates, and aluminum foil be bagged with steel cans--not with aluminum beverage cans). Also, since aluminum beverage cans bring in the greatest amount of money from these drives, we ask that neighbors be especially encouraged to save them for College Hill. We can also collect miscellaneous metals, such as copper and bronze, metal piping, and wiring. Please also let neighbors who want to get rid of their aluminum cans or other recyclables before our next drive know that they can contact us (785-554-8068) so we can store those items until then. (As much as possible, we want to encourage neighbors to recycle with our neighborhood!) Thank you! It?s sold and will be finalized Sept. 12, 2022. I am hoping there is a house for me in this area that small than this one. Since my husband, Skip Ellis, passed away last September it has been hard to keep up with it. If you do know of any homes in the area that for sale please let me know. (As much as possible, we want to encourage neighbors to recycle with our neighborhood!) (July 20, 2022)* ? Moving toward the future, on Monday July 18th, Topeka Metro?s Board of Directors approved the purchase of six new heavy-duty transit buses. Three of the buses will have traditional diesel drive systems, while three will be Topeka Metro?s first fully electric buses. The acquisition of the three electric buses will mark the beginning of a pilot project that will test the new technology in real operating conditions. The pilot period will consist of a three-year effort of testing various scenarios related to such things as weather, passenger loads and states of battery charge in order to better understand how electric buses could potentially be utilized by Topeka Metro. The electric buses are manufactured by Proterra Operating Company, Inc., of Burlingame, California. The total cost of the three electric buses, chargers and warranties will be $3,506,547. A portion of the cost--$1,737,825--will be grant-funded under the Federal Transit Administration?s Low and No Emissions program. The delivery of the buses is expected to be in within 12-18 months. Gillig, LLC, of Livermore, California, is the manufacturer of the diesel buses. The total cost of these three buses will be $1,727,760, of which $1,468,596 will be grant-funded under the Federal Transit Administrations Bus and Bus Facilities Program. The delivery of these buses is also expected to be within 12-18 months. The addition of these six new buses will ultimately mark the end for some of Topeka Metro?s oldest buses that have been in service for over 12 years. Over the next few years, Topeka Metro will be working to transition its current fleet in a new direction as it works to evolve into a more efficient and effective service. ?We are thrilled to have this opportunity to bring a new type of bus to Topeka, featuring a cleaner and quieter ride that benefits our riders, and broader community,? said Bob Nugent, Metro?s General Manager. ?These new buses will allow us to test innovative technologies and features that can hopefully be expanded upon in the future as we seek to diversify our services.? As always you can contact Judy at jwilson at parstopeka.org or call 266.4606 for any concerns. *Safety Information* Neighborhoods have been experiencing mail theft. It has been suggested to take any outgoing mail to the post office rather than putting out the mail with the red flag up. People taking mail and altering the checks you might have in that outgoing mail. Another suggestion was to go on USPS.com and click on Informed Delivery. The post office will send you an email each day with a picture of the mail you will receive that day. If you do not get your mail, you can call the post office. Another issue that has been reported is that people may be leaving dollar bills near a vehicle or under the windshield wipers. The bills have been known to have fentanyl on them which can be deadly because it is a high dose. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a major contributor to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the U.S. If you find a bill on the ground or on your car, don?t touch it and call law enforcement at 911. If you would like to know more about Fentanyl, there is a meeting on Wednesday, July 27 at 9 a.m. at the Kay McFarland Japanese Garden and Venue, 63 SW Gage Blvd . at the Topeka Zoo. If you would like to attend, please email me at jwilson at parstopeka.org. *National Night Out* National Night Out is still planned for August 6. Neighborhoods are planning their events with 53 neighborhoods registered. It is not too late to register for the event. A registration form is attached if you know of anyone who would like to register their neighborhood. Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff?s Office, Shawnee County District Attorney?s Office, Topeka Fire Department and Kansas Highway Patrol support National Night Out every year. *Resources* Bottled water is provided by Dillons as well as a $10 gift card. Hy-Vee is providing ice and a $10 gift card. Stipends will be available for neighborhoods - $50 for under 100 participants and $100 for more than 100 participants. Frito Lay is providing chips again this year. Spangles is providing coupons and Sk8away is providing passes. Crime Stoppers is providing resources as well. Reser?s Fine Foods will again provide side dishes for NNO neighborhoods. *Pickup Day, Monday, August 1* The pick-up day will be Monday, August 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 2209 SW 29 th Street. *Kick-off Party* National Night Out Kick-off Party will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hy-Vee parking lot at 29th and Wanamaker.
