Good morning,



The City of Topeka is excited to announce a pilot mowing program as part of
the first year of its Changing Our Culture of Property Maintenance
Initiative.



The pilot program will provide backup mowing services for those living in
Neighborhood Improvement Association (NIA) areas, by making sure that a
fixed and affordable rate model is available.

County are invited to nominate candidates they believe demonstrate
exceptional leadership ability. Individuals driven to make a difference in

?LGT is an important program for Topeka, and one that has developed and
graduated many of the outstanding leaders who are moving our community

?We hope to see a strong pool of candidates nominated for the next cohort.?



Those selected for the 2023 class will participate in a five-month-long
program that runs January through mid-May and consists of a two-day retreat
and eight day-long sessions, primarily occurring on Fridays.

Those sessions cover key community concerns and opportunities surfacing
throughout Topeka and Shawnee County, and participants learn adaptive and
technical leadership skills that will serve them well into the future. LGT
participants also graduate from the program with a greater understanding of
Topeka/Shawnee County and a better idea of how to create change and get
results through their community involvement.



High-school juniors and above are eligible to be nominated for LGT.

Monkeypox in Shawnee County

*Topeka, Kan.* ? The Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) working in
conjunction with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and
the Kansas Health and Environment Laboratories has identified a probable
case of Monkeypox in Shawnee County. The individual was exposed after
contact with a confirmed positive case that had traveled to Shawnee County
from out-of-state. SCHD is awaiting confirmatory test results from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The individual is currently isolating at home and KDHE is working to
identify and monitor any and all close contacts. To maintain patient
confidentiality, no additional information will be shared at this time.

The monkeypox vaccine, JYNNEOS, is available to individuals in Shawnee
County with a known exposure to a positive case. Due to limited vaccine
supply, eligible individuals will be contacted by KDHE or SCHD through
contact monitoring efforts.

?The risk of monkeypox transmission in Shawnee County continues to be low,?
said Teresa Fisher, Director of SCHD. ?The Shawnee County Health Department
will continue to work in close collaboration with KDHE and our local
healthcare partners. Should you be experiencing any symptoms consistent
with monkeypox you should contact your medical provider immediately.?

People with monkeypox sometimes develop a flu-like illness with fever,
fatigue, and enlarged lymph nodes followed by a rash. The incubation period
for monkeypox is typically 7 to 14 days; however, it can range from 5 to 21
days.

Monkeypox is a viral infection that can spread through contact with body
fluids, sores, or shared items (such as clothing and bedding) that have
been contaminated with fluids from sores of a person with monkeypox.
Individuals with monkeypox may spread the virus through:

   1. Respiratory secretions through prolonged face-to-face interactions
   (the type that mainly happen when living with someone or caring for someone
   who has monkeypox);



   1. Direct skin-to-skin contact with rash lesions (lesions may look like
   pimples) or infectious sores/scabs;



   1. Sexual/intimate contact, including kissing, hugging, massaging and
   cuddling;



   1. Living in a house and sharing a bed with someone; and



   1. Sharing towels or unwashed clothing.

Most people with monkeypox have a mild illness that improves without
treatment over 2 to 4 weeks. Treatment is supportive and focused on easing
the symptoms of the illness. Monkeypox is contagious and can spread easily
to others until scabs have fallen off and a new layer of skin has formed.
Monkeypox is NOT spread through casual brief conversations or walking past
someone in a store.

To prevent the spread of monkeypox, SCHD recommends:

   1. Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that
   looks like monkeypox.
      1. Do not touch the rash or scabs of a person with monkeypox.
      2. Do not kiss, hug, cuddle or have sex with someone with monkeypox.



   1. Avoid contact with objects and materials that a person with monkeypox
   has used.
      1. Do not share eating utensils or cups with a person with monkeypox.
      2. Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels, or clothing of a
      person with monkeypox.



   1. Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based
   hand sanitizer, especially before eating or touching your face and after
   you use the bathroom.



KDHE has set up a phone bank that is available to assist in answering
general questions about monkeypox. Individuals can call 1-866-KDHEINF
(534-3463) Monday-Friday, 8:30 am ? 5 pm or can email their questions to

The Kansas Department of Transportation is reminding motorists that
beginning Monday, Aug. 15, westbound I-70 through downtown Topeka will be
closed to all traffic from S.E. 8th Street to Topeka Boulevard for up to
three weeks while pavement patching is completed on the Polk-Quincy
Viaduct.



The S.E. Adams Street and S.E. 8th Street on-ramps to westbound I-70 will
be closed in the morning, and the contractor will begin placing traffic
control signage to close off the corridor.

Drivers should expect to use alternate routes by the afternoon.



The 8th Street exit will be the last open ramp for westbound motorists.
Westbound I-70 through traffic will follow signed detours and be routed
south to I-470, or north to K-4 to U.S. 24 to U.S. 75, or drivers can use
the local street detour - Madison Avenue to 6th Street to Topeka Boulevard
to the 1st Street I-70 on-ramp. Eastbound I-70 traffic will remain open,
but still reduced to one lane.



Working in collaboration with the City of Topeka, KDOT has studied
construction work zones in the area and researched traffic patterns. There
will be increased traffic congestion, however, the designated detours will
be able to handle the increase. Drivers should expect delays and plan their
routes accordingly.



Once the pavement patching is complete, westbound I-70 will reopen to one
lane. Both directions of I-70 will remain reduced to one lane from just
east of MacVicar to S.E. 8th Street until construction of the viaduct?s
replacement is complete.



The Polk-Quincy Viaduct project is scheduled to begin in early 2025. More

We are excited to announce that Topeka Habitat for Humanity has received a
$25,000 grant from Lowe?s to help complete 5 Housing Plus repair projects
in Shawnee County. The funding is part of Lowe?s partnership renewal with
Habitat for Humanity International that includes a donation of $2.5 million
to support 100 local Habitat organizations undertaking home repair and
rehab projects across the U.S.

?We are thrilled to be partnering with Lowe?s to create a sustainable and
lasting impact for the aging homeowners in our community. Access to safe,
decent and affordable shelter becomes even more important as we age and we
are so thankful to have Lowe?s supporting our Housing Plus approach to our
Aging in Place program,? said Janice Watkins, CEO, Topeka Habitat for
Humanity.

The granted funds will allow Topeka Habitat to focus on repairs that
improve the quality of life for those that are aging in their homes with a
focus on safe, accessible and energy-efficient repairs that will allow the
homeowners to continue to live in their homes with increased autonomy,
accessibility and dignity. This work is vitally important as Aging in Place
is a focus for the City of Topeka and housing partners, as the number of
residents age 65 and older is projected to increase by 24 percent over the
next five years, according to the Citywide Housing Market Study and
Strategy Summary.

August 23, 2022 from 8:30-3:30 to build a ramp for an aging homeowner at

U.S. 24 project begins Thursday in Topeka



A milling and overlay project on U.S. 24 in Topeka is scheduled to begin
Thursday, Aug. 25, weather permitting. The project spans less than half a
mile on U.S. 24 to the east and west of the N.W. Rochester Road/N.W. Tyler
Street intersection.



According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic will
encounter intermittent lane closures on U.S. 24, N.W. Rochester Road and
N.W. Tyler Street. Traffic signals at the intersection will continue to
operate as normal, and flaggers will also alert motorists to slow down in
the area.



Work will take place 24 hours a day, Monday through Friday, and Saturdays
as needed. There will be a speed reduction and 11-foot width restriction
through the work zone. Drivers should plan for delays of up to 15 minutes.



Superior Bowen Asphalt of Kansas City, Mo., is the contractor on the $1.7
million project, which is expected to be complete by late October.



KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when
approaching and driving through a highway work zone. To stay aware of

events in the fall. The first event is at Highland Park High School on

FutureNow: Finance is an interactive financial literacy simulation.
Students receive a profile detailing their life at age 26, including their
profession, salary, family status, and more. They use this information to
navigate through stations representing all the expenses they must account
for in a month, such as housing, transportation, child care, groceries,
etc. Volunteers are positioned at each station to help students determine
what they owe and help them with their budget. Students leave the event
with a better understanding of creating and balancing a budget.

The success and lasting impact of these events depend on volunteers like
you. We hope you will join us for this incredible volunteer experience.  If

*Topeka, Kan.* ? The Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) has been
notified that it has been awarded national accreditation through the Public
Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). PHAB is a nonprofit organization that
administers a rigorous national accreditation program which has local
health departments across the nation demonstrate how they promote and
protect the health of the communities they serve. PHAB?s mission is to
advance and transform public health practice by championing performance
improvement, strong infrastructure and innovation.



?We are extremely honored to be recognized by the Public Health
Accreditation Board for the amazing work our team does ensuring that
Shawnee County is the best place to live, work and play,? said Teresa
Fisher, Director of the SCHD. ?Becoming accredited is evidence of the
continual excellence of our department and I am especially proud of our
staff for the time and effort they put in every day. It is because of them
that we are able to offer quality and essential public health services to
our community.?



The national accreditation program, jointly supported by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sets
standards against which the nation?s more than 3,000 governmental public
health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services
and performance. To receive accreditation, a health department must undergo
a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer reviewed assessment process to ensure it
meets or exceeds a set of quality standards and measures.



?Whenever you see our seal of accreditation, you will know that the Shawnee
County Health Department has been rigorously examined and meets or exceeds
national standards that promote continuous quality improvement for public
health,? Fisher said. ?By continuing to improve our services and

The SCHD becomes one of more than 300 health departments across the United
States accredited by PHAB; including, one of seven county health
departments in Kansas (Douglas, Johnson, Reno, Riley, Sedgwick and
Wyandotte) to achieve national accreditation along with the Kansas
Department of Health and Environment and the Fort Riley Department of
Public Health.



Public health departments play a critical role in protecting and improving
the health of people and communities. In cities, towns, and states across
the nation, health departments provide a range of services aimed at

The YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment has launched a new FREE group
(flyer attached) focused on building connections to resources and
developing skills. This group is open to victims and survivors of all
genders who have experienced domestic/dating violence, sexual assault,
human trafficking and stalking. Topics include empowerment, goal setting,
financial freedom, self-care, and navigating community resources.



This group is held in-person at YWCA Northeast Kansas (225 SW 12

Mondays from 5:00-7:00 PM until December 12, 2022. If interested, please
