The *Shawnee County Warm Line* is *not* a crisis line, but simply a line to create connections and conversations, and where you will find a listening ear to help you feel reconnected to your community. This line is fully staffed by community volunteers, and was made possible through the partnership between Topeka Community Foundation, Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, Valeo Behavioral Health, Jayhawk Area Aging Agency, Habitat through Humanity, United Way of Greater Topeka and HealthSource. *How it works* Community volunteers are needed to take and make calls from the *Shawnee County Warm Line.* Volunteers will simply serve as a listening ear and provide friendly conversation to callers. Volunteers will need to have access to a smartphone and be willing to download a free app that will forward calls right to the volunteers? phone during the shift. *There will be a brief recorded virtual training and an info packet sent out to volunteers prior to volunteering.* A Background Check is also required for this volunteer role. *Shawnee County Warm Line Shifts* - Monday-Friday 10AM - 2PM; 4PM-8PM - Two, two hour shifts per day: 10am-12pm and 12pm-2pm, 4-6PM and 6-8PM - There?s capacity to have up to three volunteers ?logged in? taking calls during each shift The Shawnee County Warm Line is working to provide a calling serves for those that might need a warm conversation, as they have been sheltering in place. If you have individuals that might be interested in and/or could benefit from a phone call, please use the link below and we will work to get them into the system to be called by our trained volunteers. We will once again offer different topics each month, all focusing around kids? mental health/behavior. Instead of the presentation being a lecture format, we?ll be answering the PARENTS?/CAREGIVERS? questions. I have attached a pdf of this year?s schedule along with a flyer with specific information about this month?s topic ? *Caring for Your Kids in a COVID-19 World*. Please share the attached flyers (pdfs) or jpgs below to encourage folks to sign up. If you?re active on Facebook, please feel free to share our posts with your followers as well. Thanks in advance and as always, please let me know if you have any questions. Take good care, stay well and have a great rest of the week and weekend! Rolling power outages will take place across all of Shawnee County, and there is an expected impact of about 60 minutes at a time as has been requested by the Southwest Power Pool due to high demand. We do not yet know how long these rolling outages will be needed. Please plan accordingly. The full press release from Evergy can be found on their website titled Southwest Power Pool Requests Emergency Electricity Reductions. *Shawnee County residents can take steps to conserve energy by the following*: ? Turn thermostats a little cooler (65-68 degrees). Avoid the use of electric space heaters. ? Close blinds and shades to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. ? Change or clean filters on furnaces. ? Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances ? When possible, delay non-essential uses of energy washing drying clothes, washing dishes and bathing to non-peak hours, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. ? Use low-temperature cooking methods and avoid opening the oven door if it?s on. *Tips from SNCO Emergency Management to stay safe during power outages in cold weather:* - Stay indoors and away from doors and windows. - Do not use gas stoves to heat your home. - Try to keep everyone in a central room of the home. - Close off unused or empty rooms. - Use flashlights in lieu of candles to avoid a fire and burn hazards. - Close window curtains to help insulate and potentially hold more heat in the house. - Have emergency and preparedness kits stocked and at the ready. - Do not call 911 to report your power being out. - Check on neighbors and the elderly. - Protect pets from the weather by bringing them inside. The Shawnee County COVID-19 Response Team Phase 2 vaccine distribution weekly update includes the number of vaccines delivered and administered from the Shawnee County Vaccine Collaborative. The vaccine collaborative includes Stormont Vail Health, The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus, GraceMed, VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System and the Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD). The SCHD and the Vaccine Collaborative are now planning for the Pfizer vaccine to provide six doses per vial. The extra doses pulled from the vials will continue to be undertaken in accordance with the Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) guidelines, which has previously ruled that this will allow for more scheduled vaccinations versus the five doses per vial originally. SCHD did receive last week's vaccine allocation of 2,340 prime doses. This allocation was delayed several days by weather but did arrive on Friday, February 19, 2021. SCHD anticipates the weekly allocation of 2,340 prime doses will arrive on time this week, and they are expected by Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Further, in accordance with our second week of K-12 vaccinations SCHD anticipates an additional 4,680 prime doses to arrive this week, earmarked specially for K-12 staff. Boost doses also arrive weekly in shipments which are separate from prime doses. Last week's boost doses were also received on Friday, February 19, 2021 and there are no delays expected this week. Those who will be vaccinated this week by the Shawnee County Vaccine Collaborative will be individuals over the age of 65 and K-12 staff. Doses remaining from the K-12 staff vaccination effort will be redirected to individuals over the age of 65. Approximately, 1400 doses of the Moderna vaccine are being distributed ?directly? from the Federal Government to our local registered pharmacies. The allocation of the doses distributed to the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System is not available at this time. As of February 16, 2021, there have been approximately 17,877 individuals, 65 and older, that have been vaccinated. Currently, 16 out of 25 Long Term Care facilities in Shawnee County have reported 1,184 residents vaccinated, 976 staff vaccinated which amounts to approximately 92% of the residents and a 62% vaccination rate among staff. Shawnee County Health Officer, Dr. Erin Locke, provided a COVID-19 vaccination update to the Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners this morning on behalf of the Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) and Shawnee County Vaccine Collaborative. Shawnee County continues to receive 2,340 doses (prime) of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine each week from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The Collaborative is hopeful that these allocations from KDHE will increase in coming weeks, which in turn will be allowing for more individuals to get vaccinated. Additionally, the number of locations that an individual can receive a vaccination has increased in recent weeks to include local pharmacies that are a part of the Federal Pharmacy Partnership program. GraceMed, the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Shawnee County, is also expected to begin receiving 300 doses of additional vaccine weekly beginning the week of March 8th from the Federal FQHC Partnership. Both GraceMed and the local pharmacies are receiving allocations directly from the federal government; and these doses will be in addition to any doses Shawnee County receives from KDHE. Shawnee County is currently vaccinating in Phase 2a, which includes vaccinations of individuals aged 65 and older. Shawnee County has had over 18,000 individuals aged 65 and older that have already been vaccinated in this phase. Phase 2a also includes K-12 faculty and staff and Shawnee County has received an additional allocation from KDHE earmarked specifically for this population. Shawnee County anticipates interested K-12 faculty and staff to have completed first doses by the end of the week. Shawnee County plans to begin vaccinating childcare and mass transportation workers next week. As Shawnee County continues to move forward in Phase 2a, the SCHD is actively working to ensure vaccines are available to those aged 65 and older, including those who have barriers to receiving the vaccine. Numerous community partnerships have been promoted to assist individuals in completing the Shawnee County COVID-19 Interest Survey including pop-up events across the community. Individuals may continue to call the SCHD at 785.251.4949 for assistance in completing the interest survey. The Collaborative understands that transportation continues be a barrier to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. The Shawnee County COVID-19 Response team has already completed several site audits of locations to hold vaccine clinic outreach locations with more scheduled throughout this week and the team is working to prioritize locations that are in areas of the Shawnee County with the highest need. The SCHD is proactively collecting a list of our homebound residents and are developing plans with community partners to vaccinate these individuals in their homes. Questions can be emailed to CovidVaccine at snco.us. *Shawnee County Health Department is committed to working in partnership with our community to promote and protect the optimal health of all people by bridging gaps to eliminate health inequities, respecting the diversity of our community, through adaptive and innovative processes.* *Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube* [image: Logo_Color_Transparent(3x2.5)]*Craig Barnes* Division Manager Community Health Outreach and Planning Shawnee County Health Department 2600 SW East Circle Drive Topeka, KS 66606 http://www.shawneehealth.org/ 785.251.5612 office 785.806.6310 cell 785.251.5696 fax Rachelle Vega-Retana, Grants Administrator City of Topeka, Dept. of Planning & Development Division of Housing Services 620 SE Madison St . 1st Floor ?
