This past Saturday's neighborhood recycling drive brought in $115.00! Here are the amounts we collected and were paid: Aluminum cans--219 lbs. @ 45 cents/lb. $98.55 Misc. metals ("Shred #3 Loose Metal")--220 lbs. @ 7.5 cents/lb. 16.50 ATM rounding --.05 *TOTAL $115.00* Compared to our last (September) drive, we collected about 30 more pounds of aluminum and were paid a little more for the aluminum and miscellaneous metals (45 cents and 7.5 cents/pound, respectively, compared to 40 cents and 6 cents/pound earlier). As a result, we earned $29 more this drive. Since the neighborhood recycling drives began in September 1990, our College Hill Association has received *$14.491.08* from recycling! We are hopeful that we will pass the $15,000 mark in 2022! We thank and appreciate VERY MUCH all the people who contributed their recyclables (But we still would love to get more neighbors to contribute). We were pleased that most recyclers are sorting their materials the way we've been asked to do. Many thanks also to the dear neighbor friends who helped to pick up and deliver recyclables: Frank and Sarah Meadows; James, Hank, and Harley Stamper; Cynthia Neufeld Smith; and John and Carol Christensen. We are also grateful that Elizabeth Herbert, a former College Hill neighbor, again let one of our teams of volunteers use her truck to pick up metals. Our *next **recycling** drive will be Saturday, March 26*. Remember to sort your materials. Cat food and tuna cans, aluminum pie plates, and aluminum foil should be bagged with steel cans--not with aluminum beverage cans. Also, since aluminum beverage cans bring in the greatest amount of money from these drives, we ask that neighbors save them for College Hill. We can also collect miscellaneous metals, such as copper and bronze, metal piping, and wiring. If you need to get rid of aluminum cans or other recyclables before our next drive please contact Carol Christensen at 785-554-8068 so items can be stored until then. Thank you! Shawnee County Health Officer, Dr. Erin Locke, has issued updated recommendations to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the Shawnee County community. These updated recommendations continue to be in accordance with recommendations from both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the State of Kansas. Recommendations continue to focus on the primary mitigation measures that have been shown to have the greatest impact on reducing the spread of COVID-19. Updates to the COVID-19 Recommendations from the Local Health Officer include updates to definitions, an added section regarding COVID-19 vaccines and updated links for Industry-Specific guidelines. Shawnee County has seen increasing cases, percent positivity and hospitalizations over the last several weeks. The vast majority of cases and hospitalizations in Shawnee County continue to be in unvaccinated individuals. A smaller number are in individuals who are eligible for a booster dose but have not yet received it, particularly in older adults and those with high risk medical conditions. Vaccination to COVID-19 is the leading strategy for protecting the health of the community and ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccination remains highly protective against severe symptomatic disease from COVID-19, including hospitalization and death. At this time, individuals aged 5 and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination and individuals aged 16 and older are eligible for a booster dose. Currently, 57% of the population in Shawnee County is fully vaccinated and 65% has received at least one vaccine dose. Bi-weekly updates regarding the status of Shawnee County?s vaccination efforts can be found on the SCHD Vaccine Webpage here . The SCHD continues to strongly encourage residents to protect themselves by getting a COVID-19 vaccine and subsequent booster dose once they are eligible. Many opportunities to receive a COVID-19 vaccine continue to exist in our community and can be found easily through the CDC?s Vaccine tool . Early identification and treatment for COVID-19 remains essential. The SCHD strongly encourages immediate testing with the development of any COVID-19 symptoms or after contact with a confirmed positive case. Individuals at high risk for severe disease should discuss early outpatient treatment of COVID-19 with their healthcare provider. Testing continues to be available and free to Shawnee County residents. To find a location near you, visit www.knowbeforeyougoks.com or contact your healthcare provider. Face masks also continue to be an effective strategy at reducing the risk of COVID-19. Individuals unable to achieve physical distancing, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a face mask in indoor public spaces and when interacting in indoor private spaces with unvaccinated individuals from other households. A face mask should also be worn by individuals, regardless of vaccination status, in very crowded outdoor settings where consistent physical distancing is difficult to maintain. Health officials understand that holiday traditions are important for families and children. The Shawnee County Health Department and health officials across Kansas are encouraging individuals to protect themselves and their families amidst increases in COVID-19 cases and the emergence of the Omicron variant in several communities. There are several ways to enjoy holiday traditions and protect your health. In order to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends taking the following precautions: - *Get vaccinated and boosted*. Vaccines remain the best tool to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. The three authorized COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalizations and death and scientists expect they will also prevent serious illness, hospitalizations and death in people infected with the Omicron variant. COVID-19 vaccines are now authorized for people ages 5 and over. The COVID-19 booster shots are authorized for people ages 16 and over. - *Get tested*. Even if someone is not showing symptoms, they can still spread the virus. Protect your loved ones by getting tested for COVID-19 before spending the holidays with friends and family. - *Wear a mask*. It is recommended that you wear a well-fitting mask over your nose and mouth in public indoor settings, even if you are fully vaccinated. If you or someone you are celebrating with has a weakened immune system, is at an increased risk for severe disease or is unvaccinated, wear a mask while gathering as an added precaution. - *Take travel precautions*. It is recommended to delay travel until you are fully vaccinated. Whether you are fully vaccinated or not, it is important to know the travel recommendations and restrictions before your trip. For information about domestic and international travel guidance for fully vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, visit the CDC?s Travel page . *Shawnee County Health Department is committed to working in partnership with our community to promote and protect the optimal health of all people by bridging gaps to eliminate health inequities, respecting the diversity of our community, through adaptive and innovative processes.* *Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube* [image: Logo_Color_Transparent(3x2.5)]*Craig Barnes* Division Manager Community Health Outreach and Planning Shawnee County Health Department 2600 SW East Circle Drive Topeka, KS 66606 http://www.shawneehealth.org/ 785.251.5612 office 785.806.6310 cell 785.251.5696 fax Rachelle Vega-Retana, Grants Administrator City of Topeka, Dept. of Planning & Development Division of Housing Services 620 SE Madison St . 1st Floor ? The Shawnee County Health Department was notified today of the first confirmed case of the Omicron variant in a Shawnee County resident by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). ?We have been expecting and preparing for this notification of Omicron in our community," said Dr. Erin Locke, Shawnee County Health Officer. "The Omicron variant is much more contagious than previous variants, even Delta, and has the capacity to evade some of our hard-won immunity. It will spread more easily in the home and at work, in schools and at community events. Fortunately, the familiar mitigation measures will work against this respiratory virus, but we must be vigilant. It is extremely important to get vaccinated with a booster, wear a mask, get tested, maintain physical distance and stay home when sick.? KDHE and the SCHD are urging Kansans to use the following tools to protect themselves against COVID-19 and the omicron variant: ? *Get vaccinated and boosted.* Vaccines remain the best tool to protect people from COVID-19, slow transmission and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. The three authorized COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalizations, and death. Scientists expect the vaccines to prevent serious illness, hospitalizations, and death in people infected with the Omicron variant. COVID-19 vaccines are now authorized for people ages 5 and over. The COVID-19 booster shots are authorized for all individuals ages 16 and over. To find a vaccine near you, visit www.vaccines.gov. ? *Wear a mask.* Masks offer protection against all variants. It is recommended that people wear a well-fitting mask in public indoor settings in Kansas, where COVID-19 transmission remains high, regardless of vaccination status. ? *Get tested.* If you are sick or have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, it is recommended that you get tested for COVID-19. COVID-19 tests are available across Kansas. Go to www.KnowBeforeYouGoKS.com to find a free testing location near you. At-home tests are available for purchase at grocery stores and pharmacies. These can be used at home, work or anywhere and can provide rapid results. If a positive result is received through an at-home test, individuals should follow up with a health care provider about a confirmation test. ? *Social distance.* When in public settings, stay at least 6 feet from other people, especially if you are at higher risk of getting sick. 1st Floor ?
