Shawnee County Solid Waste is increasing the sustainability of recycled glass. Single-stream recycling, or collecting all recyclables in one container, often results in contamination, especially when glass breaks or when dirty containers are thrown into curbside bins. The recycling facility cannot process the glass in a clean enough manner for it to be sold as a recyclable commodity and therefore, ultimately ends up being disposed of in the landfill. To alleviate the disposal costs and increase the sustainability of our customer?s recycled glass, Shawnee County has partnered with Ripple Glass to get the glass out of the single-stream collection and into a dedicated glass recycling program. Currently, all Shawnee County Solid Waste customers have recycle curbside bins which were created and distributed in 2012. During this time, glass was accepted and picked up with all other recyclables. There are over 40,000 recycle bins in use right now throughout the county with a label indicating glass is acceptable. Bill Sutton, Director of Shawnee County Solid Waste stated, ?All of the new recycling bins that we are purchasing have the changes made on the label. It would require a great deal of effort to print and apply new labels for the existing lids. Therefore, we are asking our customers to mark out the glass on their label or put a piece of tape over it if it helps them remember not to put glass in the recycling bin.? Shawnee County Solid Waste customers have 5 designated locations throughout Shawnee County to drop off your recyclable glass. *Current Glass Recycling Locations*: Wehner?s Thriftway ? 551 E Hwy 24 Traffic Way, Rossville, KS Household Hazardous Waste Facility ? 131 NE 46th St., Topeka, KS Albert Neese Masonic Lodge ? 5947 SE 45th St., Tecumseh, KS District 2 SNCO Public Works Building ? 1639 N Washington Street, Auburn, KS Lowes ? 1621 SW Arvonia PL, Topeka, KS Shawnee County Solid Waste is looking to add more locations. To: It is time to GET OUR MOMENTUM BACK! As we continue to manage our way through COVID-19, let?s also refocus our efforts toward continued community success. That is MOMENTUM2022 - (MO22), the five-year strategic plan for Topeka-Shawnee County that has challenged us all to address a-number-of objectives toward improving the quality of life for all in the community. At this stage in the strategy it is time for us to check our progress and make sure we are creating change, we need your help. You play a vital role in getting our momentum back. We ask you champion these efforts with your network and complete the MO22 Community Survey. Click Here to access the survey or copy and paste: https://www.topekapartnership.com/back2mo Your input will help us obtain important data to evaluate the business climate, entrepreneurism, education, livability, and quality of life offerings. This will help us determine next steps toward reaching key objectives by June of 2022, when this strategy ends and another begins. We are asking that surveys be completed no later than 10/9/2020. *Michelle Cuevas-Stubblefield *(she/her/hers) Senior Vice President of Strategy Leadership Greater Topeka/Momentum 2022 719 S Kansas Ave. | Topeka, KS 66603 tel: 785.246.6147 | cell: 785.430.1325 [image: image003.jpg at 01D68C47] Rachelle Vega-Retana, Grants Administrator City of Topeka, Dept. of Planning & Development Division of Housing Services 620 SE Madison St. 1st Floor ?
