*Health Department to offer free Flu vaccine to community*



Topeka, Kan. ? Due to the increase in flu activity in our community and
across the State the Shawnee County Health Department (SCHD) will begin
offering *FREE* flu vaccine to anyone six months and older *starting Monday
February 4, 2019*, while supplies last.



Even though this year?s current flu severity is lower than last season?s,
flu is still taking a serious toll according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC). So far during this flu season (October 1,
2018 through January 19, 2019) the CDC estimates that there have been up to
11.4 million flu illnesses, 5.4 million flu medical visits, and 136,000 flu
hospitalizations across the United States. The CDC recommends that the best
way to prevent flu is by getting vaccinated each year.



The flu shot will cause antibodies to develop in the body after
vaccination. These antibodies provide protection against infection from the
flu virus. The flu contributes to approximately 39,000 deaths in the United
States every year.



Anyone can visit our immunization clinic at 2115 SW 10th Ave during regular
clinic hours (see below) to receive their flu shot, no appointment is
needed. For more information about getting a flu shot from SCHD call
251-5605.

Additionally SCHD encourages residents to take the following steps to help
minimize the spread of germs:

   - Avoid close contact when possible
   - Wash your hands
   - Cover your cough
   - Stay home if you are sick
   - Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
   - Regularly practice good health habits

The monthly Harvester Mobile Food Pantry will be held Tuesday, February 12th, 9:00 .A.M. at the Topeka Shawnee County South Parking Lot Expo Centre.
No I.D or income requirements required, just the number of persons in the household.
Fresh vegs, fruit, dairy and bakery/bread products will?be given out on a first come first serve basis? We average?about 30 lbs of fresh food each?mon
Volunteer are always welcome and needed.? Volunteers should arrive about 8-8:15 a.m.
Persons who walk to pick up food will see?the food table and chairs.? We appreciate the walkers, please come.
Thanks to everyone who comes and those who come to help.? We will be starting our?10th year in March at the Expo Centre. You all have made a great difference for a lot of family's.

The College Hill Chili Feed is just around the corner! Join your neighbors and members of the community in our annual Chili Feed + Contest. Are you ready to taste amazing chili and contribute to College Hill neighborhood? 

Join us for the annual College Hill Chili Feed! This event is an important fundraiser for the neighborhood and a great chance to get caught up with your neighbors. 

Place Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1275 SW Boswell Ave.
Date February 16, 2019
Time 5 PM - 7 PM
Cost $5 for adults and $2.50 for kiddos

Donated chili is needed, and if your chili has what it takes you can win a prize. Chili contest categories include traditional, nontraditional and vegetarian. Please bring chili to Westminster by 4:00pm.

We're also in need of additional donations. Bring yummy toppings for the chili like cheese, onions or sour cream - and don't forget the jalapenos! Or do you love to bake? Bring a dessert to share. Drinks are also welcome like soda, lemonade and water. Bring desserts or sides by 4:30pm, drinks by 3:30 (or bring it cold).

Event volunteers needed! We need help calling for donations and running errands. We also need wonderful volunteers the day of the event helping with setup, kitchen workers and cleanup. College Hill events are made possible by amazing volunteers. Join the team!

The Mirror Work for Success Dads Program is currently enrolling for our
next 4-week training session which starts on February 25th.  Our flyer and
brochure are attached for your information.



Our program provides case management, mentoring, work readiness, fathering
skills, relationship skills, financial management and family violence
prevention training to low-income dads in Shawnee County.  This year-long
program starts with Phase 1, a four-week training session that focuses on
self-actualization, career exploration and job readiness.  It is a holistic
approach to obtaining and maintaining long-term employment that encompasses
not only the work world, but all aspects of living a healthy lifestyle,
along with goal setting and life planning. Our goal is to develop dads and
build relationships so our participants become better fathers who can
provide for their families.
